Where The Big Doll House really succeeds is in its mix of titillation and action, a fast-paced combination that makes it one heck of a fun exploitation movie to watch. It's also worth noting that this movie gave the great Pam Grier her first real starring role; she would become a Jack Hill regular before moving on to more substantial roles. Pam even sings the movie's theme song.  Do not confuse it with their next, much milder, "The Big Bird Cage" which is still better than the average WIP (Women in Prison) movie. So, here you have another "women in prison" movie with some new twists and plenty of the tried and true elements like nudity, humiliation,  catfights, and an eXcellent disco strip search.  If that is your brand of entertainment, then this flick delivers.  Plus, where else can you see Eric Estrada rescuing these bimbo sisters from the white-slave operation in a fake LA women's prison.  

If you watch Adult films you will recognize several porn stars, most using assumed names. If you're a fan, you'll recognize Kashcha, Ron Jeremy, Tyffany Million, Janine Lindemuller and Julia Parton.  Anyway, there's loads of female nudity (it IS a women's prison flick, after all), kung-fu fighting, simulated sex, plenty of stupidity, truck-loads of prison stereotypes, entire continents of beautiful chicks and an ending where everything turns out okay. Oh, and did I mention Erik Estrada?

The exquisite Sarah Jane Hamilton stars as the thrill-seeking heiress Rebecca, with her luscious cellmate Nicole (long-legged, pierced-nipple Misty Rain) sharing her sensual sentence. The mischievous Warden Lola, turns in the performance of a lifetime, lashing her inmates into a carnal frenzy of caged lust.  If you like your action all-the-way X-rated style, then this movie may be, the one you've been waiting for all this time.  A full ninety minutes of intense, unrelenting, non-stop action awaits you when you check into Prison World!

Many consider this the greatest women-in-prison film ever made (I put it in the top 5). Caged Heat takes the traditional sex-and-violence formula of gorgeous babes behind bars, gratuitous nudity, and degradation at the hands of beastly guards and a corrupt system, and transforms it into rebel burst of grrrl power. Jonathan Demme's directorial debut, made for Roger Corman's New World Pictures in the glory days of 1970s drive-in moviemaking, wedges his message of empowerment in between the showers and the shock treatments. Russ Meyer alumnus Erica Gavin stars with tough cookie Juanita Brown as they lead the brassy set of cellblock babes through prison breaks and bank robberies, all pulled off with smarts and sass.

It is pretty much a Jewel Shepard fan movie. A Roger Corman production shot in the Philippines as usual and Jewel Shepard plays Amanda, an operative for secret agency of the US Govt.  While trying to get a US-favored leader out of his country, a rebellion starts. The revolutionaries capture the leader's daughter and it's up to Jewel to get herself arrested so she can break the daughter out and spirit her to safety.

Jewel Shepard, action, adventure, monsoons, women's prison whippings... what more could you ask for? A must-have for all Jewel Shepard fans but down my list for WIP movies in general. 

New Catfight Videos

Cleverly written and cheaply produced in response to the right-wing Christian protests which had been making headlines in the UK at the time on the back of several recent controversial film releases - notably "A Clockwork Orange", "Straw Dogs", "The Devils" (all 1971) and "Last Tango in Paris" (Ultimo Tango a Parigi, 1972) - "Whipcord" opens with a now-famous dedication "...to those who are disturbed by today's lax moral codes and who eagerly await the return of corporal and capital punishment...." Though contemporary critics railed against the threadbare production values and soft-core nudity, it's apparent that much of their outrage was prompted by Walker's brazen challenge to the Christian moralists, whose over-zealous rhetoric has always enjoyed a disproportionate measure of representation in the British media.

The film is deliberately crude and confrontational, with a vulnerable heroine - played as a timid 19 year old  by relative newcomer Irving, struggling to survive against all the odds. Markham's latent insanity threatens to expose her hideous regime to the outside world, allowing her staff to indulge their most puritan impulses. Keith is especially good in this regard ("I'm going to make you ashamed of your body. I'm going to see to that...personally!"), manifesting the corrupt zeal of a True Believer with little room for pity or compassion. The plot is believable and the mean spirited dialog by the guards is intense.  You get the feel of a small scale Spanish inquisition without the questions.  No lesbian scenes by guards or inmates, but the strip, shower, and torture scenes including whippings and hangings are brutal in the insane name of British stoic righteousness.  There are several nude scenes of the attractive stars but they flow with the story and are not gratuitous.  Frankly, I prefer them that way.

Image's DVD is presented in the original full-frame format and runs 102 minutes. The print is more than a little ragged in places, and the Eastman color process has faded badly, meaning that some parts of this gloomy film are difficult to see clearly while other scenes are well lit. That's the fault of the original photography, not the transfer and I highly recommend the DVD version. There's no trailer, no extras, and no captions or subtitles - par for the course in Image's 'Euro Shock' collection. Sound format is 1.0 mono, and the disc isn't regionally coded so it will play anywhere.

Anchor Bay's DVD presentation is excellent. The picture is sharp (as sharp as a Franco picture can be), colorful, and well framed. The audio commentary by Dyanne Thorne, Howard Maurer, and host Martin Lewis is not only very informative but hilarious. Thorne's memory of the production is quite clear and she had a lot to say concerning certain nude shots of her which she was unaware of prior to seeing the completed film. Franco really is the man and apparently he knows how to live life. The uncut disc comes with a nudity filled trailer and is enhanced for 16x9 TVs. Well worth your money if your a fan of severe eXploitation done right.  Want to see a YOUNG Dyanne Thorne?  Check out 1964's Sin in the Suburbs.

(Here is the plot so don't read this section if you want to be surprised when you see the movie,)  Suzane has a junkie brother who shoots and kills a drug pusher. She tells him to flee and she takes the rap for the murder, thinking that they'll give a woman a lesser sentence for the crime. She's thrown in the slammer with a bunch of hot-blooded Brazilian beauties that always seem to be naked. She's put in a cell with about 7 other women. One woman is the queen bee of the cell, and she's horny. So, the other women strip our innocent fish and then whip her with wet towels. Then our queen bee jumps on top of her to get a little forced intimacy.

Her injuries from the towel whipping are pretty bad, so she's sent to the infirmary. The lesbian "head matron" wants to know who did it to her, but she won't talk, so she and a guard take the fish to the showers and hose her down, trying to get her to talk. The force of the water rips her shirt open. But the fish doesn't talk and is sent back to the infirmary. Next, while still in the infirmary, three guys who were associates of the drug pusher who was killed sneak into the prison and attempt to hang her, putting a noose around her neck and hoisting her into midair. The lights are flipped on and the thugs scatter and our fish is saved from being hanged, but again, she has sustained quite a bit of injuries. Things aren't going well for this woman at all. The doctor in charge takes a special interest in the woman (who wouldn't?). He finds out that it was actually her brother who committed the murder and he tries to get the brother to confess so our fish, Angela, can be released before she's killed. But being a worthless junkie, he won't.

After Angela has recuperated a bit, she is invited into the head matron's office. The head matron tells her that she can protect her if she would only show her some affection, and the matron puts the moves on her. At first Angela resists, but the next thing you know, they are in a surprisingly explicit lesbian love tryst, complete with full frontal nudity, French kissing, the works. Pretty hot stuff even for these sorts of movies!

Meanwhile, Angela's brother commits suicide and leaves a note behind confessing to the murder of the drug pusher. The prison doctor and the local authorities immediately get a judge to sign papers to have Angela released from prison.

But before notification gets to the prison, it's exercise time in the prison yard and an inmate tries to stab Angela in the back, but the biggest meanest inmate, who happens to like Angela, prevents it. She then takes the knife and stabs the attacker. What happens next is something I haven't seen in a prison yard fight before. As the guards pile into the yard and tell the women to drop the knife, she beheads the attacker and flips her head toward a guard! Now there's an all out women's prison riot and Angela and a small group of women escape over a wall with guns they stole from guards that were wounded or killed in the riot. She doesn't know that she'd be released from prison if she just stuck around a bit.

Now we're full on into a jungle adventure. A huge group of guards and dogs are on their trails trying to catch up to them. The women can't get along too well, and have numerous catfights with each other. Some are attacked by killer snakes. Angela gets sick of all of the infighting and strikes out on her own. The guards catch up to the women, but the women fight them off.

Eventually, some local guys find the three women who have survived thus far, capture them, and tie them up. They are going to turn them over to the authorities for the reward money, but not before they try to rape the women. Fortunately for the women, Angela shows up with her gun and all of the rapists are killed by the women. One woman is killed in this mess, so there are three women left, including Angela, and they make their way out of the jungle and steal a truck. They're going to make it across the border. But there's a really big, mean guy sleeping in the back of the truck. He secretly lets the gas out of the gas tank, and when the trucks comes to a stop, he bashes in the front window of the truck with a big crowbar, but one of the women blows him away. To make a long story short, they make their way on foot to a church with children in it, and a huge number of guards surrounding the church. Again, the women are fighting, and one of them tries to kill Angela, but the doctor shows up and prevents it and kills the woman. Now there's two women left. The two women and the doctor make their way out a back entrance, but the guards open fire. The one woman gets to a car and then drives the car into the group of guards, hitting a truck, which causing a big explosion, which kills all of the guards. Our doctor and our lovely Angela are the only ones left standing and they are now free to go off and start a wonderful new life together.

In general, I like 70s exploitation action movies, and this is a good one. Never a dull moment. The dubbing is good. The women are generally good looking. There's gobs of nudity, including full frontal, lesbianism, including a surprisingly explicit scene with the lesbian head "matron", whippings, catfights on land, catfights in water, gun battles, a hosing down scene (provided by a tank that shoots water at the women during the big riot) a big riot, and of course, a beheading. Well, hell, what more do you want?  I rate this movie high, because it's not only a good WIP movie, it's also a good action movie

Definitely worth seeing for fans of Japanese filmmaking.  Never has exploitation looked so beautiful.  It is mastered from a gorgeous wide-screen print - the image is sharp and the colors vivid. The subtitles are printed on the film, but in this case they are easy to read and grammatically sound. The DVD also features the theatrical trailer and informative liner notes on the series.  This is the 2^nd film in the series but you do not need to see the 1^st to understand and enjoy this one.

While it worth seeing for fans of Japanese filmmaking and WIP films, the nudity is brief, as are the catfights and "punishment" scenes.  The two main female actresses are very sexy and the story line is solid so I rank it above average for the WIP genre.  I saw the VHS version which was dubbed in English.

Women in Cages is about a couple of American gals in a Filipino prison watched over by none other than the queen of 70's exploitation films Pam Grier. Eventually the gals cross Grier the wrong way and end up in The Playpen, the prison's torture chamber. 

• Judy Brown, a fair-skinned brunette, ends up getting stripped, suspended, then placed in leather boots mounted on a slab that spreads her legs wide enough to accept the smoldering charcoal from an evil-looking brazier. "This is our version of the hot foot!" Grier gleefully shouts. 
•  The other American gal, blonde-haired, blue-eyed Roberta Collins, is stripped, strapped to a wheel, spun around and tortured with a spear.
• Philippine actress Sofia Moran who played "Theresa."  A very sexy, sultry, and popular actress in her country back in the early '70's. She was not "billed" during the opening credits of the film, but her character was the one I was able to sympathize compared to the other 3 main characters. Her portrayal of a victimized prison inmate sexually abused by the Matron, played by Pam Grier, is a worthwhile reason to see this film.

Flames from the brazier in Ms. Brown's scene and a strategically placed restraining strap around Ms. Collins' waist when she's on the wheel keep the nudity at an R rating, but its still pretty hot stuff. Eventually the two gals kidnap Grier, bust out of the prison, and escape into the jungle leaving Grier tied spread-eagled to a tree. Grier is later molested then killed by a gang of bandits hired to catch the escapees.  The other girls think they have succeeded only to be double-crossed once they get back to civilization. What a great way to end a '70s exploitation film!
